Wind coming down the canyons is what finally opens a roof up here. A few tile ends lift, the underlayment cooks for a couple of seasons, and the first real rain shows up as a stain over a bedroom. Off Escondido Canyon Road and out past Vasquez Rocks it's the same pattern on tile, standing-seam metal and heavy architectural comp. The fix is usually less dramatic than people expect — reset the field, replace the felt and flashings, detail the edges so the next Santa Ana doesn't undo it.
Access changes the job more than the roof does. Two-acre parcels, long private drives, a barn or arena in the way of the dump trailer. We'd rather walk it first than guess. And the hangar-attached homes near the Airpark have spans and slopes we don't see anywhere else in the valley.
